THE RIGHT WAY TO FLY

Great footage.
Sound decisions.

Commercial aerial filming calls for the right pilot, operating approvals and planning.

I’m a licensed drone pilot and aerial cinematographer. My commercial drone work is conducted under a partner’s SACAA operator certificate, with each shoot planned around the location and applicable permissions.

For paid drone work in South Africa, a pilot licence alone is not enough. SACAA also lists operator, aircraft and commercial approvals. Private recreational flying follows different requirements.

Non-compliance can be costly. For exercising a licence or certificate privilege without holding it, the 2026 Part 185 administrative-penalty table lists R20,000 for a first offence, R40,000 for a second and R64,000 for a third for individuals. Other contraventions and companies have different penalty amounts; enforcement depends on the offence and circumstances.

BEFORE WE TAKE OFF

A few useful answers.

Can you film anywhere in Durban?

Every location needs a review. Airspace restrictions, site access, people nearby, property permissions and weather can affect a shoot. Locations near airports or in controlled airspace may require additional approvals. Send the location early so the operating team can assess what is possible.

Do you work outside Durban?

Yes. I’m based in Durban and work across KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa, including Umhlanga and the North Coast. Travel and production requirements are included in your custom quote.

What does it cost to book drone filming?

Quotes are tailored to the location, operating requirements, time on site, shot list and editing deliverables. Share your brief and I’ll propose a suitable scope.

What credentials should I ask a drone service for?

Ask about the remote pilot’s qualification, the operator’s SACAA certificate, the aircraft’s registration and approval, and the authorisations relevant to your location and intended flight. A pilot licence and an operator certificate serve different purposes.
